He served in the military in Vietnam in 1969 and returned home to complete his college education. Sandy graduated from Florida International University in Miami and was later commissioned in ROTC as an Army officer. Sandy’s military training included U.S. Army Ranger, Airborne and Pathfinder and he served nearly three decades in the military in command and staff assignments throughout the world. While assigned as an Army Ranger instructor for the swamp phase of Ranger Training at Eglin AFB, Florida, he received his first Masters Degree from Troy State and later taught undergraduate Management classes at night for Troy State to military personnel and their families at Eglin AFB.
Among his many interesting assignments in the military, Sandy commanded the Emergency Operations Center for the U.S. military in Berlin, Germany and was in Berlin when “The Wall” came down in 1989. After his returned to the U.S., Sandy attended the Naval War College where he received his second Masters Degree and was later assigned to Joint Task Force Four in Key West, Florida (“The Drug War”). It was during this military assignment that Sandy wrote his first story (“The Strange Journey of Byron and Cyrus”) with adventure, excitement and wonderful values that young children and adults can understand and enjoy together. Sandy eventually retired from the military and now they lives in Destin, Florida with his wife Judy.
